The Panamint Valley is a sister valley of the Death Valley, situated parallel to it and flanked by two mountain chains. A beautiful road crosses both mountain ranges and leads finally into the inner part of the melting pot of Death Valley, the Stove Pipe Wells.

We begin our demanding - but well-balanced - tour just behind Lone Pine at Owens Dry Lake. A steady incline leads us from the bottom of the Rocky Mountains up to the Panamint Range whose highest point is the Telescope Peak at 11100 ft. The constantly inclining stretch of road is not very high, but high enough to be out of breath, at any rate. After several s-bends, the stretch leads on sheer endless miles down into the valley without deviating even a foot from the straight line. By the descent into the valley, we can already see the next ascent in the distance. In order to get to it, we cross the Panamint Valley which is a sandswept salt lake.

The next mountain chain has to be crested. This time much steeper and with many s-bends, we ride uphill into the rocks, which are even today criss-crossed with veins of silver and gold. At the highest point we spot the Death Valley, in which we arrive from the west. We stop at the first parking place, very close to the famous dunes of the Death Valley, the Stove Pipe Wells.

If your watch shows less than 3 hours, you have done well. To really experience this ride, we recommend you install a large, hot hair-dryer.
