Our very demanding tour, via the highest asphalted mountain pass in the Alps to Val d’Isere and back (comprising 60 miles, with a total of 7546 ft in altitude) begins in Lanslebourg at 4590 ft above sea level, in the Arc valley.

As a first challenge, shortly after Lanslebourg, a 2 mile-long, hard ascent up to Col de la Madeleine awaits us, before a long, flat section to the village of Bonneval sur Arc .

Here begins the ascent proper up to Col de l’Iseran (9088 ft).

While enjoying a magnificent view, we ride the s-bends up the steep slope, which has an incline of almost 8%.

We pass through a high valley dotted with quaint stone houses. After further s-bends we get to an impressive stone and scree landscape, which gives the impression that the pass is not far away.

Shortly before the pass summit, the ascent increases significantly for 1.9 miles.

On the subsequent 10.6 mile descent to Val d’Isere (5905 ft) we enjoy a beautiful view of the Isere valley.

Anyone who has still strength in their legs can start again on the almost 32 mile journey back via the Col de l’Iseran to Lanslebourg.
