Tuscany - Around the city Volterra - Part: 2

Volterra at 555m above sea level is an ancient city with a history stretching back more than three thousand years. In those days the Etruscans lived here and named their city Felathri. The city walls are from this Etruscan age as well as the imposing city gate Porta all'Arco and several archeological findings that can be seen in the museums in the city.

In 298 BC the city fell to the Romans, in the middle ages it was conquered by the Medici. At the end of the 15th century Lorenzo de Medici had the imposing Medici fortress with the round fortress tower "Il Maschio" built. Volterra is also the city of alabaster. There are several alabaster workshops here, open to interested visitors. The complete length of our tour from Volterra through Il Castagno, San Gimignano, S. Donato, Castel San Gimignano and back again to the starting point at Volterra is approximately 62km.

From the big parking place "Docciola" in the Viale dei Filosofi street we initially ride north west up small uphill bends and then on the Strata Provinciale to the north, 10 km steep downhill.

After arriving in the valley we turn to the right and ride flat, after 12 km on the SP 15 uphill to the village of Il Castagno and thus achieve 400m of height. At the ridge of the hills with a wonderful view we ride uphill and downhill for about 12km to San Gimignano.

San Gimignana, the “city of the beautiful towers” sits on a hill dominating the Elsa valley, in a picturesque situation. The small mountain city distinguishes itself by its virtually authentic medieval cityscape. As in the middle ages barely 7,000 people live here. 15 (of previously 72) house towers from the 13th century are the landmark of the city and show the prosperity and pride of the citizens still today.

The highest towers were and still are the town hall tower Torre Grossa (54m) and the tower of Palazzo des Podesta (51m). The Piazza del Domo and the Piazza della Cisterna are the centre of the city.

With their triangular basic form, the arched profile and the huge house fronts it is a pure form of the middle ages. The public open space was named according to the draw well made of grey white travertine that was built in 1273 on a multilevel base.

Our ride passes along the city wall through the hilly landscape and after about 12km we reach the village of Castel San Gimignano. After 16 exhausting and sweat-inducing kilometers we return to our starting point of Volterra.
