From Barbian to Klobenstein

The starting point of this 10km long tour is BARBIAN (836m), also known as "the village with the asymmetric tower".

The municipal area of this resort with its wonderful landscape stretches from the valley bottom of Eisack up to Rittner Horn (2,260m), one of the most beautiful viewpoints in South Tyrol, with a direct view across to Schlern, South Tyrol’s most popular mountain and the landmark of the region.

We leave Barbian to the South and ride on the old Kaiserstraße that is well constructed, and with little traffic, at the start flat and later slightly descending down to the hamlet of SAUBACH. We enjoy on this stretch of road the wonderful view to the Eisacktal and the valley opposite and the Barbianer waterfall. We pass the church in Saubach that was built in the gothic era, follow the street at Pennhof that is now getting narrower (it is worth seeing the wonderful fuchsia in the court!!) - first downhill and then later uphill to the Rotwandter-Hof.

Here you can visit the little St. Verena church that is on a porphyry hill and is mentioned for the first time in 1256. A most impressive panorama across to the Dolomites and to Kastelruth in the valley opposite is the reward for this detour. We cycle up the pleasantly situated road and pass the very interesting Penzlhof until we reach the Braun stately home.

To reach the village of LENGSTEIN (972m) we have to overcome a very steep stretch of road. Cycling uphill we reach MARIA SAAL (1,185m) with the lovely church of the same name built in the 16/17th Century, mercy picture legend, wall painting “Virgin Mother with the umbrella" and the little St. Nikolaus Church, whose tower was built in the 12th Century.

Not as steep as before we ride on to LENGMOOS (1,164m) with the lovely Kommende, an establishment of the German knightly order, and then we arrive at our destination KLOBENSTEIN (1,156m). In Lengmoos we visit the earth pillars known throughout the world. These are geological curiosities. The development of these organ pipes that grow out of the earth trace back to the ice age, when the glaciers deposited the moraine material here, from which the earth pyramids develop. Due to erosion these columns are growing steadily and also due to these erosions they will also vanish as soon as the copestone falls off from the inside.
