The king's stage and absolutely the most demanding part of the German Tour 2007 was the 5th stage "Sonthofen Sölden" with the ascent to the Rettenbachferner - the highest finish of a UCI ProTour race.

The final ascent of over 12km after Sölden with 1,317m of ascent demanded even the last power reserves of the athletes.

On this DVD we ride this route from Sölden (1,354m) on the Rettenbachferner (2,671m) or optionally the longer route of 14km on the Tiefenbachferner (2,830m) with a height gain of 1,476m.

We start this very demanding tour in Sölden and turn right at the south of the village to the well known ski areas of Rettenbach and Tiefenbachferner.
Now we ride continuously with an ascent up to 14% uphill. We steeply follow the glacier road and reach the west flank of the Ötztal at about 2,000m above sea level and then reach a small tributary valley, the Rettenbachtal. Here is the tollbooth and the following flat area will be the last for a long time.

Soon we will cross a glacial stream at the Falkner inn (2,145m) and from there on it will be continuously uphill. The breathtaking beauty of this wild landscape in the mountain area and with the mountain air getting thinner and thinner makes our pulse increase.
Shortly in front of the "valley station" for the cable car on the Rettenbachferner, we can now either turn right to the Rettenbachferner, one of our destinations, or turn left to the Tiefenbachferner, the other destination.
On our way through the moonscape without any vegetation to the Tiefenbachferner there is another highlight: riding through a 1.7km long poorly lit tunnel with the proverbial “light at the end …” as a guide.

Only at the end of the tunnel the pain has an end, as you are now at the highest point of this tour at 2,830m above sea level.
