The Starnberger Lake and the surrounding moraine landscape were formed in the last ice age.

The west bank is dominated by the Andechser ridge of hills with the Machtlfinger hill country and the Ilka height at Tutzing. This bank is not as steep as the eastern part Münsinger ridge of hills.

The deepest point of the lake is 127m the same depth as the Seeburg at Allmannshausen. Only a few hundred meters from the east bank the lake bed goes vertically down for more than 100m

In the Starnberger lake there is the island of "Wörth" with an area of 2.56 ha better known as "Roseninsel" (Isle of Roses). Whenever the imperial cousin Elisabeth "Sissi" stayed at Possenhofen Castle, King Ludwig II met her here. Until his death both were intertwined by a deep soul friendship.

In 1970 the Free State of Bavaria bought the "Roseninsel" and made it public again.

Today the casino and the rose garden have been restored to almost their original condition.
